Dear Students,

We are proud to announce that Charles O. Dewey Middle School will be taking this year’s Leadership Exploratory Adventure to Iquitos, Peru. While last year’s excursion to Mexico was an overwhelming success we feel that this year’s trip will be an even more rewarding experience for our children.   In this year’s trip, we will:

  • Investigate the animal and plant life, geography and culture of the Amazon Rainforest
  • Work with children in a local village
  • Engage in rainforest hikes and exploring local plants and animals.
  • Experience the medicinal plants of the rainforest,
  • Learn native customs and craft making
  • Visit with a local Shaman.
  • ..And so much more

Below you may find the basic information in relation to our trip.

Dates of Trip: Thursday, February 12th - Friday, February 20th (TENTATIVE)
Cost: Free to chosen students (transportation, vaccinations, activities, food and lodging)

If you are interesting in joining us on this once in a lifetime opportunity you must submit an application by Thursday, October 30th to Mr. Sackler.   Students will be required to have the recommended vaccinations, permission slips, travel letters and documents to participate.

To apply you must write an essay including the following information:
  1. Why should we choose you? What would your teachers and fellow students say about you that makes you perfect for this trip?
  2. What leadership skills or unique qualities do you have that will contribute to success of this trip?
  3. Why are you interested in exploring the Amazon Rainforest and Peru? Give at least 3 specific reasons why.
Your essay must be legible. You must put your full name, class and date at the top.
All student essays will be reviewed. There will follow at least one interview with the staff members chaperoning the trip and interviews with your teachers. Semi-finalists will be required to participate in a group project between 7 and 8 AM.
There will be a mandatory meeting on Thursday, October 23rd at 5:00 PM for those students and parents who are interested in participating in this trip.  Additional details will be discussed at that time. If you have any questions, feel free to ask any of the staff listed above.  If you don’t try you will never know if you might have been chosen. You might be surprised.  Be Proactive and turn in your essays as soon as possible!
Sincerely,
